How Often Should You Really See the Dentist?

By Ray Nunnery, DDS

If you have ever wondered whether the standard “every six months” advice actually applies to you, you are asking a good question. The honest answer is that six months is a sensible default for most people, but the right interval depends on your individual mouth.

Where the six-month guideline comes from

Twice-a-year visits became the norm because, for the average healthy patient, that interval does a good job of catching problems early. Plaque hardens into tartar within a couple of weeks, and even diligent brushers miss spots. A professional cleaning every six months removes what a toothbrush cannot, and a paired exam catches small cavities, early gum disease, and worn or cracked teeth while they are still easy and inexpensive to address.

When you might need to come in more often

Some patients genuinely benefit from a three or four month schedule, including:

  • People with a history of gum disease, who need more frequent maintenance to stay ahead of it
  • Patients who tend to build tartar quickly
  • Smokers, and people with diabetes or certain other health conditions
  • Anyone going through orthodontic treatment or managing a lot of dental work

When less frequent may be fine

A young adult with healthy gums, no cavities, and excellent home care may do perfectly well on a six-month rhythm for years. The point is that the schedule should reflect your real risk, not a one-size-fits-all rule.

The bigger reason not to skip

The most expensive dental problems almost always start small and silent. A cavity caught early is a simple filling. Ignored, it can become a root canal and a crown, or eventually a lost tooth. Gum disease is often painless until it has already cost you bone support. Regular visits are not about selling you treatment; they are about catching things while the fix is small.

At our Walnut Creek office, we tailor your recall interval to what your mouth actually needs and tell you honestly when you can stretch it out. If it has been a while since your last visit, that is okay. The best time to come back is now.
